NYC Recap / New Pics
I’m just catching my breath after a very very intense but exhilarating week in New York and New Jersey for my “On Our Hands” show at the Jacob Lewis Gallery and accompanying projects like my 143′ x 37’ mural in Jersey City facilitated by Mana Contemporary. I spent the better part of the year working on the fine art and print editions for the collection in the Jacob Lewis Gallery and the Pace Prints Gallery a floor below so it was amazing to finally see it all in frames and on the walls. I am lucky to have a great group of people supporting me in these ambitious productions including my crew of assistants – Dan Flores, Nicholas Bowers, Rob Zagula, Jacob Lewis and his staff, as well as all of my staff in my LA studio; thanks to Jon Furlong from Obey Clothing for his photo documentation as well as his willingness to pick up an X-acto when we were running behind schedule on the large, rough, and challenging wall in Jersey City. Thanks to gallerist Jonathan Levine and Stan Studol and his team from Mana Contemporary for facilitating the mural.
I also have to thank Chris Stein of Blondie for doing a discussion with me at NeueHouse in New York because he is one of my creative heroes and a friend of many of my other heroes including Andy Warhol. Thanks to Rizzoli for helping to facilitate the talk with Chris where we also discussed Chris’s book Chris Stein / Negative and my upcoming monograph Covert to Overt: The Under/Overground Art of Shepard Fairey. The great artists and musicians who came out to see the show is too long a list for me to name drop here tastefully but it should go without saying that it was an incredible honor and quite humbling to be supported by so many people who have inspired me.
If you’re in the New York City area, try to stop by the gallery because these works have a lot of effort put into layers and subtleties that don’t translate well in photographs. Thanks again to everyone who attended or supported the show in any way! – Shepard
