SURE – Rest In Peace

Our condolences to SURE’s family and friends.  A message from a close friend of SURE…

It is with my deepest regrets to inform you that this morning I received news of the passing of my close friend Sure. Last night he was killed in Afghanistan where he was stationed as a Intelligence Officer in the United States Marine Corps. Sure was born and bred in Brooklyn and recognized for his exceptional handstyle which brought together elements of classic New York graffiti with ornamental calligraphy. His script signatures could be found throughout the city and were a major influence on myself and countless others. Sure also received great recognition as one of the most prominent sticker bombers of all time. Of the thousands of stickers he put up, nearly every one of them was individually hand done in an incredible array of styles. This was recently exemplified in Stickers: From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art (Rizzoli) by DB Burkeman and in Martha Cooper’s latest book Name Tagging (Mark Batty Publishing) which features an interview with Sure. Sure was like a brother to me. He was my partner-in-crime and my best friend. I am grateful for the time we had and that everywhere I go in New York City I see his name and know that his presence will be felt by many long after his passing.

The Medium is the Message

Despite my concerns about the environment, I still subscribe to the physical, made of cut-down trees, LA Times Thurs-Sun. I spend so much time in front of a computer doing art and design(and answering email) that I relish reading the news at the breakfast table in my home or a restaurant. Don’t get me wrong, I love the convenience and democracy of new media and technology, but I worry about the quality of info in an age where “faster” seems to trump “better”. My concern extends beyond the quality of basic news journalism to the nature of written communication itself. I refuse to own a phone with email on it because I don’t need more distractions, I need to concentrate in order to make artwork and my A.D.D. is bad enough already. The editorial I linked by Neal Gabler from the Sunday LA Times analyzes some of the phenomena contributing to the deterioration of thoughtful communication. It cites, among others, Marshall McLuhan, the gentleman who coined one of my favorite phrases: “the medium is the message”.  Check it out… it is a reminder that better communication is superior to more communication. I bet Sarah Palin wishes she had read this before she Twittered “refudiate”.

Ewok

My friend, graffiti writer EWOK, just updated his site. There are a lot of great graffiti and random off the wall and humorous stuff. I’ve liked EWOK’s work since I first saw it in the mid 90’s. EWOK got up with COPE and INDIE at the Houston and Bowery wall last May when I was working on my mural. Check out his site www.mr-ewokone.com

Paper Magazine x Shepard Fairey guest editor

I am proud to announce that the PAPER magazine issue I guest edited is now on the newsstand. I am the first guest editor in PAPER’s 26 year history and I was honored to make a creative and conceptual contribution to a magazine I’ve been a fan of for so many years. I’d like to think that  the collaborative nature of this PAPER issue, including the cover I designed with Friends With You and the illustration I created to accompany Carlo McCormick’s insightful essay, make the issue somewhat of a collector’s item. By the way, if you check out the linked articles, you’ll find the story of how I first connected with Carlo(who hooked up my first art in a NY gallery) and the rest of the PAPER crew.
Pretend we still live in a world where people value tangible, non-virtual, objects and indulge my ego and your nostalgia by buying the PAPER issue and supporting a great magazine that has always supported me, and the culture we all love. You never know, leaving the house for a crisp stroll to the newsstand might inspire something great.Thanks.

Activism in Burma

These photos are from Burma outside the home of Aung San Suu Kyi. It is exciting for me to see that my image of her made it to the activists in Burma, and even more exciting that the activists can assemble without repressive consequence.

Aung San Suu Kyi Released

Aung San Suu Kyi IS FREE! The pressure from the human rights activists, organizations, and concerned countries finally yielded the release by the military junta of Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Unfortunately, the release was timed to be after the rigged elections that maintained the control of the military junta in Burma. Hopefully Aung San Suu Kyi will be able to build a legitimate political party and movement without persecution. Thank you to everyone who helped support Aung San Suu Kyi, human rights, and democracy.
