Shepard x John Van Hamersveld’s Hendrix Print Release

John Van Hamersveld’s Hendrix is my favorite poster of all time. I just published a beautiful large format, fine art screen print edition of the image. Read more after the jump about the poster edition and history of the image.

In celebration of John Van Hamersveld’s Hendrix drawing + the iconic poster for the Pinnacle Concert February 10th 1968…and the influence this one image has had on art + artists since that concert… Shepard has published the new hand pulled silkscreen and tells the story.   This is a must have in any print collection!

Alto Arizona Print Release

First and foremost on behalf of the Alto Arizona/ NDLON/ Puente Arizona family I would like to greatly thank all of the hundreds of artists who donated imagery to the Alto Arizona Art Campaign launched this past April.  We appreciate your generosity, self determination and commitment to the struggle we face in Arizona battling SB1070, 287G, Joe Arpaio, Russel Pearce, Jan Brewer and HATE.  As of now we are working on the next chapter of this campaign which will include a new website and productions of more limited edition prints to be up for sale in the future.  The funds generated from the sales of this print (Alto Arizona Girl) will go directly to hire a campaign manager to further organize and take this campaign to the next chapter.  We would also like to give a BIG thanks to our friend Shepard Fairey and his crew (Dan, Tina, Kyle, Mike, Olivia, Jen,  Jaspr, Debbie) who have been very helpful in the sales and facilitating of this campaign, your help and dedication has been a great help in our efforts for dignity in Arizona. Thanks- Ernesto

In the last year, Arizona’s immigrant and Latino community organized to defend themselves and to uphold cherished national values. They have marched, they have held sit-in’s, they have been arrested, and their efforts have captivated the attention of the nation. Critical to the effort in Arizona has been the voice of the artistic community. Our colleague, Ernesto Yerena inspired literally hundreds of artists- musicians, graphic designers, street artists, and others to donate artwork to the cause. The body of work is an expression of liberation and was designed to lift the voices of a community that was supposed to be silenced by SB1070. Shepard has teamed up with Ernesto once again with the releasing of the Alto Arizona print.  The print uses a remixed image from the original collaboration for Immigration Reform campaign of last year.   A collection of other art is also available at, AltoArizona.com.

Edition of 300
Signed by both Shepard Fairey and Ernesto Yerena
Releasing 10/07/010 on OBEYGIANT.com   SOLD OUT

The next print release on ObeyGiant.com will be a portrait of civil rights activist Dr. Cornel West.   Check out this video of him speaking about Art and Culture in a Social Movement with the Alto Arizona print.

Rachel Maddow Show x OBEY

I’ve loved Rachel Maddow since she was on Air America with Chuck D. I watch her show on MSNBC regularly, and she was even kind enough to have me on as a guest. Friday night she ran a funny segment on the absurdity of Republican Carl Paladino’s behavior, which wove in a street art theme including my work. Thanks Rachel.

I’m not worthy!!!!!

Alice Cooper goes way back in Detroit with Iggy. Johnny Rotten sang “Eighteen” by Alice Cooper to try out for the Sex Pistols. The Melvins cover him. Needless to say, Alice Cooper is a legend. I saw Alice last night and he rocked. Keri Kelli his guitarist invited me and Amanda to the show. When I met Alice he said he liked me in “Exit Through The Gift Shop” I said “thank you”, but all I could think was “Whoaaaaaaa…I’m not worthy!!!!!”

Colbert Speaks on Shepard Fairey Obama Response

Even Colbert jumped on the opportunity to comment on the spin-doctored “Obama Poster Artist Losing HOPE” story. See how this misinformation thing works? At least he gave a shout out to Farah’s attributes.

Shepard Fairey Response on Obama

Regardless of how I feel about Obama, I believe democracy is about more than just voting. I choose to address different political issues with my art, using images to increase awareness, and art sales to raise funds for social causes I care about. We all have outlets for our voices and choices about how we choose to spend our money, whether its purchasing a fuel efficient hybrid or paying a little extra for electricity from green energy sources. Each of these acts, sends a message to our leaders and corporations about the direction we want them to go.

Below is a link to my response to the media’s misrepresentation of my comments on Obama last week.

Colbert Testifies Before Congress

I have a lot of admiration for Colbert as both an entertainer and a political commentator. Many of my favorite people do both well, and Colbert is a shining example even if many people don’t grasp the incisiveness of his political wit. Colbert usually plays a character and part of his success is his dedication to remaining in character. There is video of Colbert addressing Congress about the migrant worker and immigration situation in character which is, as expected, pointed and hilarious. However, there is also video of Colbert breaking character and earnestly discussing his concerns for the well being of people with the least power in society. Of course, some people are claiming Colbert made a mockery of Congress, I feel that Colbert could not make any more of a mockery of Congress than they have made of themselves. Colbert demonstrates a compassion and sincerity in the linked video below that few members of Congress could compete with. Please support immigration reform and human rights for all.
