NEW IDEAL CALENDAR- AVAILABLE NOW!

Newly arrived is the new year, a time for new ideas and a new ideal. Studio Number One’s 2009 calendar is also here (yes, it’s new too), with 12 months’ worth of fresh typography and illustration from Shepard Fairey, Zach Gibson, Kristian Henson, Philip Lumbang, Jesselisa Moretti, Cleon Peterson, Casey Ryder and Florencio Zavala.

With so much focus on the troubles of our times, we choose to see each day as a little bit of space for us to work toward innovating and solving problems. The new year brings a whole new set of these opportunities, and we’re glad we can share these little spaces with you.

Studio Number One’s 2009 calendar is printed in black and white, spiral bound and measures 9” x 14” (opened). Purchase yours at the Subliminal Projects store.

Adopt-a-Pet.com

Having recently created the ADOPT image for Adopt-a-Pet.com, I am heartened to see how many people care deeply for the plight of our fellow creatures.

I must have signed over 100 of the ADOPT stickers at the Manifest Hope show in DC. Pia Salk from Adopt-a-Pet.com was there sporting the ADOPT “T” and giving out the stickers. They were in such high demand that she actually ran out. So FYI, the stickers and other ADOPT stuff are available at: http://muttslikeme.adoptapet.com/get_image/

As for the limited edition ADOPT prints, here’s the skinny on those….

Prints will go on sale on Friday, February 6th at a random time at www.muttslikeme.com.
(Please note, they will NOT be purchasable though the ObeyGiant site.)

They will be limited to 1 per customer. I have signed and numbered each print (limited run of 400). Prints will cost $200 and all proceeds will go towards helping the millions of animals in shelters get seen and adopted. Who knows, maybe I’ll even throw a signed ADOPT sticker into one or two of the tubes when they are shipped…a la, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory…

I’m glad to see that the ADOPT image has rallied such strong support for these animals. Check out adoptable animals in your area and other ways to help at Adopt-a-Pet.com

Martha Cooper Street Shots

OPENING RECEPTION:
FRIDAY, JANUARY 16TH, 8-11PM

EXHIBITION DATES:
JANUARY 16TH – FEBRUARY 13TH, 2009

Martha Cooper has been photographing creative kids in action on city streets since the mid-1970s. In Street Shots, opening January 16th at Subliminal Projects, her photos reveal the imaginative children of pre-renewal New York City as they mined the abandoned lots of the city to create toys from trash. Cooper, renowned for her graffiti and hip-hop pictures, brings those classic images together with ones depicting inner-city kids building forts from scrap, catching flies in cola bottles and racing homemade go-karts—all without adult supervision.

The opening of Street Shots also marks several debuts: Cooper’s new book, Going Postal, a collection of photos of postal labels bearing street art; her image collaboration with Shepard Fairey, available as a screen-print poster; and her own Obey line, with photos printed on clothing, bags, and skateboards. All will be available for purchase at Subliminal Projects, along with Cooper’s other books, including Subway Art, Hip Hop Files, Street Play, We B*Girlz and Tag Town.

RIP INDIE 103

Despite the fact that Shepard created the logo for the radio station Indie 103.1, Shepard was a big fan of the station’s musical selection and programming.  He often was featured on Indie as a guest of Jonesy’s Jukebox show and even sub’ed in for Henry Rollins on his Harmony in my Head show… Yesterday we were sad to hear that suddenly Indie is no longer going to be broadcasting over the radio.  We are in its last days. The story is still a little unclear as to the complete reason for the immediate drop but you can read more on the Indie site below.  All is not lost as Indie will still be broadcasting over the internet but one thing is for sure it will never be the same.

R.I.P. Ron Asheton

Ron Asheton, founding member and guitarist, alongwith Iggy Pop, of one of my favorite bands, The Stooges died of a heart attack last week. I got into The Stooges after first hearing the Sex Pistol’s cover of their song “No Fun”. I really believe that punk started with The Stooges. I was lucky enough to see The Stooges play live three times after they re-formed in 2000. The shows were intense for a young band, much less guys who were in their 50’s. This is a sad day for fans of visceral rock.
