SURFACE: Portraits of Street Artists Opens April 25th!

I initially met Soren Solkaer in Copenhagen while I was diligently working on a mural. He asked if he could shoot a portrait of me and very hastily, but deftly did a setup using some red gel and available light that turned out to be a stunning composition (despite the aesthetic deficiencies of the subject!). Soren also gave me his book which is full of amazing portraits of some of my favorite musicians like Franz Ferdinand, the Raveonettes, and Paul Simonon of the Clash. Soren spoke to me about his idea to photograph some of the world’s leading street and graffiti artists with their work. Surface is the ambitious culmination of that idea from 2011 and the book and art show richly capture the subjects and their environments. The show is not to be missed!

I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll 33 1/3

Joan Jett is one of the most prolific, bad-ass women in music.  I was honored when Joan asked me to recreate the cover of her 1981 album “I Love Rock ’n Roll,” for its “33 1/3 Anniversary” Deluxe edition coming out this month.  This is one of my early favorite albums and I used to BLAST it in our house as a kid. We didn’t have a great stereo, but it was pressed loud enough to blow the doors off anyway! It is a big deal for me to work with Joan and I am really pleased with how the album design turned out.   If that’s not enough, finally, time has come for Joan’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! To celebrate Joan’s induction and re-release of her classic album, I am offering a limited print run of the design which will be available Tuesday, April 21. Congrats Joan! -Shepard

A Message from Our Sponsor

The oil and gas industry has long enjoyed a history of strong influence in Washington.  Individuals and political action committees affiliated with oil and gas companies have donated $238.7 million to candidates and parties since the 1990 election cycle, 75 percent of which has gone to Republicans.

These facts only emphasize more and more that our political system is broken.  Gone are the days of democracy and here to stay are the days of a heavily influenced Congress with organizations such as the American Petroleum Institute (API), the industry’s powerful lobbying and trade association, increasing their power to continue to fuel government-backed subsidies.  The hundreds of millions of dollars that the oil and gas industry shell out to employ it’s lobbyists only ensures that policy will never change and our courageous politicians will never stand a chance to reform legislation and repeal these subsidies.

My latest piece, A Message from Our Sponsor, is my interpretation of the powerful, rich, and greedy oil and gas companies and their message to us, the constituents of this “great” democracy. Thanks for caring.

SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS is pleased to present SURFACE, an exhibition featuring portraits of street artists taken by Danish photographer Søren Solkær. The images are part of a larger book project that began in 2012 and continued into 2015. For three years, Solkær traveled internationally, photographing street artists in their element and showcasing them alongside their art in public spaces. The project culminated in a publication that ultimately serves as a portrait anthology of many significant street artists in the contemporary art scene, as well as the genre’s pioneering icons.

Power Bidder

I have frequently talked about the many problems created by the current campaign finance structure. Corporate donations distort their influence in politics and corrupt our democracy. This is an issue not many Americans seem interested in, but it affects all Americans by insuring that corporate interests are put before the interests of the average person. Genuine democracy should guarantee that politicians create the greatest good for the greatest number of people, but that idea has eroded with the favors owed by politicians to corporations in exchange for their contributions. A portion of the proceeds from the “Power Bidder” print will go to two organizations who are fighting  against political corruption, and for campaign finance reform. They are rootstrikers.org and unitedrepublic.org. Check out their sites. These orgs are doing great work, so please support them! Thanks for caring.
