Dissobey print release!
I have been a fan of Slick’s graffiti and graphic design since the early 90’s. I was following graffiti of course, where Slick’s street work was legendary, but I also followed the emergence of streetwear brands like X-Large, Third Rail, and Fuct, all of whom Slick did great tee graphics with. I was impressed with Slick’s artistic versatility and his choices of references and subversive twists in his graphics. I finally met Slick about 12 or 13 years ago at an art show at our gallery. He was cool to my face and then did a big drippy tag in our elevator. I didn’t really care except that our landlord said our art shows were attracting “the wrong element” and warned us to keep things clean. After that, Slick and I bumped into each other pretty regularly and at some point he told me he was doing a Buckwheat “OTAY” parody of OBEY. I was flattered and I enjoyed seeing some of the prints around LA. When Slick and I talked about doing an “official” collaboration, we liked the idea of an homage to creative competition and transgression. You either learn to love the chaos of the streets or you don’t last in that realm. Slick and I battled over a prominently located electrical box near MOCA in 2011 and that is what inspired the look of the poster we made. Slick did a great job capturing the look of layers of posters and the printer Black Sunshine translated the image beautifully. Thanks for love, hate, and art Slick!

Help Find the Lonely Whale!
My friend Adrian Grenier is producing a documentary, 52, about the search for the loneliest whale in the world. When Adrian asked if I could contribute a design to the project to support the Lonely Whale’s kickstarter campaign, I was more than happy to do so. Check out the design, which will be featured on posters and other rewards offered through the campaign.

Take action against the Senate’s treacherous Keystone XL pipeline approval now!
I know I sound like a broken record, but until there is campaign finance reform, many members of congress will put the interests of their most powerful donors ahead of the well being of their constituents and the environment. Please read below and support counter-measures!

CHECK OUT SHEPARD’S CAMEO ON PORTLANDIA THURS. JAN. 29 on IFC!
I’m a big fan of Portlandia, Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen’s comedy show based on poking fun at the idiosyncrasies of bohemian Portland Oregon, so I was very excited when they asked me to do a cameo. I’ve spent a bit of time and done a few art shows in Portland, so I know where Portlandia finds its inspiration. In fact, the part I play, a jaded art store employee, was set in the exact art store where I bought my art supplies while staying in Portland for a stint a few summers ago. I’m no actor, but this part, along with maybe “jaded art student” or “jaded skate shop employee,” are the closest I’ll ever get to method acting. Fred and Carrie are a blast to hang out with and made the whole experience a lot of fun for me. Here’s a clip from the segment, but you can catch the full episode Thurs. night on IFC.

PATTERN OF CORRUPTION
Cleon Peterson and I recently collaborated on a mural in Miami’s Wynwood district and were happy enough with the end result to decide to make some limited edition screen prints inspired by the mural. Cleon and I both deal with the persistent themes of the fragility of society, human savagery, and corruption in our work. The image has a dichotomy in its hypnotic classical floral pattern with sinister elements woven into it, which caution the viewer to look deeper than an appealing surface presentation.
