Glen E. Friedman & Ian MacKaye discuss some of the photographs in MY RULES on Vimeo
As I’ve mentioned previously, I worked on the design and wrote an essay for Glen E. Friedman’s awesome new book MY RULES. The book is a large format beast, weighty literally and in terms of its culturally significant content. Here are a couple of videos, one with Glen discussing some of the photos with long-time friend Ian MacKaye from Minor Threat and Fugazi, and one of his talk at Book Soup attended by his photo subjects like Tony Alva, Christian Hosoi, Jeff Ho, and Russell Simmons. Check them out, but even more importantly, pick up the book if you care about the seminal stages of skateboarding, punk rock, and hip-hop!

War Child Art of the Guitar Benefit Auction
Shepard was one of 16 artists from music and contemporary art to design a custom Caparelli guitar for an upcoming auction at Bonhams New York on Nov. 9 at 7pm. Guitars were designed by other creative luminaries including Iggy Pop, Michael Stipe, Gus van Sant, and more and all proceeds benefit War Child USA. War Child’s mission is to work with war-affected communities to help children reclaim their childhood through access to education, opportunity and justice. Shepard’s contribution features the aptly named Peace Dove guitar as seen below.

Obey In Toronto Video
Toronto was the last stop on my seven city mural tour and it was a fun place to end the tour with a bang. The Obey Clothing crew tagged along for this one and photographer Jon Furlong put together this quick montage of the murals and other happenings in Toronto.

PROP. 45 – HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE BANKING ON YOUR IGNORANCE
Health insurance companies are banking on your ignorance as they spend millions to disinform and block Prop. 45. Prop. 45 is a public advocacy measure to regulate health insurance prices. Read these articles to understand why and how the health insurance industry is using its deep pockets to mislead the public about Prop. 45. This is an important issue, but there are many more at stake in the
Nov. 4 election. Please vote… apathy leaves your future in the hands of those you may not agree with!
Thanks for caring.

Russell Brand Will Occupy Wall St. Tomorrow
Two of my friends, authors and activists David DeGraw and Russell Brand, will be doing readings from their new books in NYC’s Zucotti Park tomorrow. David is one of the architects of the Occupy movement and the 99% concept. I worked on the cover for his new book “The Economics of Revolution”. Russell’s book is called “Revolution” and both books are in their own ways, about cultivating compassion and combating injustice. I recommend picking up both books and checking out these dynamic speakers if you are in the NYC area.

SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS presents AMBER JEAN YOUNG
AMBER JEAN YOUNG
There’s A Shape In These Hills I Know
Opening Reception: Friday, October 17 · 8 – 10 pm
SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS
1331 W. Sunset Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90026
While working with Neil Young on the Americana project, I was able to meet and get acquainted with his daughter Amber Jean Young and her art. Her work is inspired by the landscape of her childhood house and her rural Northern California surroundings. She blends photographs with fabrics and then manipulates and re-constructs these images to create unique folkloric tapestries. I love Amber’s mix of images and media in her visual reconstructions and the shapes that she works with within these fabric sculptures, quilts, and wall hangings. I am looking forward to seeing these pieces hung in our gallery for the opening next Friday! If you’re in the LA area, you should definitely come check it out with us!

WHO KILLED MISTER MOONLIGHT? // SUPPORT DAVID J BOOK TOUR
Black Thoughts-White Light
I knew David J to be a fantastic musician and visual artist, but it turns out that he is also a gifted writer with a sharp style and sly wit. “Who Killed Mister Moonlight?” is not just a revealing account of the evolution of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets, peppered with stories about David’s interactions with The Clash, John Lydon, Joy Division, Iggy Pop, Rick Rubin and other heroes of mine, but an electric journey through the struggles and tensions of the creative process. David J has a dark side, but he’s no one dimensional Goth, his shades of black manifest in remarkably varied ways in his art, and in his writing, as wicked black humor. What is most compelling about this book is the way David articulates the inspirations, irritations, triumphs, and defeats that are inherent to creativity… the alchemy of turning black thoughts into white light.

OBEY 25 Year Anniversary Collection
When I made the first OBEY sticker in 1989, I never thought I was beginning a project that would inspire and permeate most of my art career for the next 25 years and counting. It’s a surreal reality to be celebrating 25 years of Obey and I’m thankful for my partners at Obey Clothing to help tell my story.
