Obey Giant Headlines

La Santa Muerte | Limited Edition Screen Print by Ravi Zupa

I see a lot of great art, but as an artist with an astounding command of a broad range of techniques and aesthetics, Ravi Zupa is a rare find. Ravi demonstrates mastery in a renaissance painting style, collage, printmaking, and drawing. The rich fusion of techniques in his work could be presumed to be appropriation, but it is not… all of the elements were rendered by Ravi.    I’m very honored that Ravi included my Obey star graphic in his Santa Muerte screen print because I love the art and Ravi and I have several shared interests in D.I.Y. culture, printmaking, and propaganda art. I think the process Ravi used to create this piece is amazing: he cuts the art out of a traffic cone like a linoleum cut and uses the cone as his plate. That cone produced the black portion of this screen print with some small liberties taken. Ravi is a true craftsman and a unique talent. I urge anyone who is in the LA vicinity to come see Ravi’s work in person. -Shepard
The Santa Muerte screen print is a signed and numbered edition of 200,16″x24″, $50.

Cleon Peterson x Obey Clothing

For Holiday 2013, Obey Clothing worked with Cleon Peterson for their artist series. In his anxiety-riddled world, violence is the status quo. His dystopian scenes evoke Thomas Hobbes’ description of life as war between individuals: “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. Deviance is simply the norm, and the displaced individual is forced to navigate this wicked world alone, finding hollow bits of pleasure and meaning in violence, sex, religion and drugs. Peterson describes his bedlam as “a gray world where law breakers and law enforcers are one in the same; a world where ethics have been abandoned in favor of personal entitlement.”
They’ll be offering a web exclusive print from one of his graphics.  It’s an 18″ x 18″ screen print on 320 gram coventry rag, edition of 125, and will be open for sale on Wednesday, Oct 9th @ 8am. Posters will be $50 each. Check out the print and the full collection here: http://www.obeyclothing.com/curated/cleon-peterson/

OBEY X Suicidal Tendencies

It is hard for me to believe that it has been 30 years since the first Suicidal Tendencies album came out. I first heard about Suicidal in 1984 while reading an interview with skateboarder Corey O’brien… When I first heard Suicidal I was attracted and repelled at the same time. The music was pretty hard and abrasive, with some dirgy metal influenced moments that I was scared might not suit my “punk” self-image. However, after playing the album a few times, mostly to try to scatter some rednecks congregated near a ramp I was riding, I began to love it…
 – Shepard
This collaboration is a tribute to Suicidal Tendencies, celebrating the bands 30th anniversary of their first album.  There is a lot more to the story so read on after the click and get Shepard’s full experience with band and find out how the collaboration came together.  Check out the collection and watch this video with Shepard, Mike Muir, and Lance Mountain talking Suicidal T.

Jacque Fragua x Indian Alley

My friend Jaque Fragua completed his mural in Indian Alley… it is in your face and I love it! I met Jaque at an Occupy event and we later traded some art. I’m now the proud owner of his “You’re All Illegal piece”. Jaque is passionate and can express his aims with his mural far better than I could, so check out what he has to say and check out honorthetreaties.org for more info on the project.-Shepard
