Rodriguez Poster by Ernesto Yerena

My friend Ernesto Yerena made a poster for Sixto Rodriguez, the subject of the Oscar Winning Documentary “Searching for Sugar Man”. Check it out!
-Shepard

Recently I had the honor to work on a collaborative print with the legendary Sixto Rodriguez who is the subject of the Oscar Winning Documentary “Searching for Sugar Man“.  To me Rodriguez encompasses key qualities that I see in my heroes which are hard work ethic, creative genius, resiliency, sincerity, and above all humility.  Rodriguez’s life to me represents a epic survival story of the struggles of the working class here in the states.   Overall its a honor to work on this piece and I look forward to see what Rodriguez has in store for us in the Future.  PS. If you are planning on going to any of his US TOUR Shows look out for the Tour Poster I designed at the merch table.  thanks  -Ernesto

Artist Shepard Fairey Invites LA Students to Collaborate in Campaign

Third Segment of Los Angeles Fund for Public Education’s Arts Matter Public Art Project hits the Streets in July.

LOS ANGELES–Artist Shepard Fairey is asking Los Angeles public school students tothink creatively.  In designing the third installment of the Los Angeles Fund for PublicEducation’s Arts Matter public art project, Fairey will create a design with inspirationfrom Los Angeles students. The resulting artwork will be displayed on city buses, billboards and other outdoor media throughout the month of July.

The request from Fairey, best known for his Obey Giant work and the 2008 “Hope” campaign image of Barack Obama, is being distributed by LAUSD teachers beginning today. Students are asked to “Use your imagination and express yourself,” and tell Fairey, “What the world looks like when you take away the things that limit you.” Students must reply by April 29, via Twitter (using hashtag #artsmatter to @LAFund), email, Facebook or by mail. Fairey will use the responses to inspire his final design.

“Creativity is invaluable in student’s lives because it cultivates problem solving, boosts self-esteem, and promotes communication. Students want to express themselves and find their voices. Art and music are outlets that manifests differently for every individual which provide a perfect antidote for the frustrations of homogeny. Creativity fosters imagination and independence, but builds community at the same time.”-Shepard Fairey

TrustoCorp: “The Future is Blight” opening reception this SATURDAY!

LeBasse Projects is thrilled to announce the reemergence of guerilla art group TrustoCorp with a solo show of brand new work in “The Future is Blight”.  Known for their bold, unexpected artwork and on site installations of meticulously fabricated billboards, highly produced street and subway signs and complex sculptural objects, TrustoCorp seeks to point out the follies of contemporary society and politics.  The work is often entertaining and humorous, and always highlights timely, hard-hitting topics that unabashedly criticize and help draw attention to the ills of humanity.

Opening reception: Saturday, April 13th, 6-9pm.  Show runs April 13th – May 11th, 2013.

LeBasse Projects, 6023 Washington Blvd.,  Culver City, CA 90232.  [email protected], 310-558-0200.  www.lebasseprojects.com

A message from Shepard Fairey and Antonino D’Ambrosio

Margaret Thatcher died today.  Here’s an excerpt from Antonino’s essay For, Not Against from his book Let Fury Have the Hour featuring original cover design and art throughout by Shepard. To get the real story see Antonino’s Let Fury Have the Hour featuring original art, titles and a thoughtful interview from Shepard. See it on iTunes now.

A moment. May 4, 1979. Retrograde. Margaret Thatcher is prime minister of England. Her first remarks are borrowed from the prayer of Saint Francis: “Where there is discord, may we bring harmony. Where there is error, may we bring truth. Where there is doubt, may we bring faith. And where there is despair, may we bring hope.” Thatcher’s decade in office was a consistent contradiction of this initial statement. A truer story is told by flipping each sentence: Where there is harmony, may we bring discord. Where there is truth, may we bring error. Where there is faith, may we bring doubt. And where there is hope, may we bring despair. “Society doesn’t exist,” Thatcher said. There are only individuals. We are unequal and we all have the right to be unequal. “Thank heavens,” Thatcher exhaled in relief. Against.   Read more
