Sound and Vision Episode 2

This week we’re premiering part 2 of our series on Shepard’s art show Sound & Vision in London from October. In this episode Shepard talks about the progression of his art from stickering to murals and his intentions with the work. We look at the progression of a street installation based on a Jamie Reid piece (most famous for his work with the Sex Pistols) and Shepard discusses the attention he gets while working now as opposed to the days when only the police seemed to pay attention to what he was doing. Click here to check out part 1 if you haven’t seen it yet.

Sedation Pill

UPDATE: Print orders will start shipping on Wednesday Jan 16th.

The “Sedation Pill” print is inspired by the title of my favorite Public Enemy album “It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back”. I think the biggest problem in America is the indifference and complacency about important issues that results from much of the population being perpetually hypnotized by conspicuous consumption, social media, entertainment, and self-medication. Using sedation and escapism for relief from the rat race might make us less aware (blissfully ignorant)  but also less empowered to improve our role within the rat race… a vicious cycle of cause and effect.

Sound & Vision Video

SOUND & VISION was my first solo show in London in five years, so I felt a lot of pressure to make round 2 with the Stolenspace Gallery a strong showing. I displayed over 200 pieces of art across two spaces, including a record store install with 1,000 of my own records, as well as doing three large outdoor painted murals. In addition, I asked my friend, frequent collaborator, and favorite DJ, Z-TRIP to create the soundtrack for the show, and also perform at the opening to really bring the sound to SOUND & VISION. Photographer and videographer extraordinaire Jon Furlong documented the trip and we have a series of video shorts from the trip with supplementary interviews with me. As you can see in the video, I’m indebted to the posse of Dan Flores, Z Bomit, Jason Filipow, and Jon Furlong for working long hours to help everything come together. Check it out!

Bad Brains Fire Burn Babylon Hardcore Hot Sauce x Limited Edition Signed Screen Print Available NOW

Hot Sauce was a vision that I woke up with one morning. I literally woke up and said to myself Bad Brains Fire Burn Babylon Hardcore Hot Sauce, then I went to Dr. Know who is a purveyor of fine foods and it was a “No Brainer“. The name is funny and real to our lives and culture. In an attempt to combine heat and sweet, with a lot of roots and love, the flavors were painstakingly tested by Doc and myself, and is the inspiration to “Fire Burn Babylon Hardcore Hot Sauce”, screen print.  Shepard knew exactly what was needed to get the “fire burn” point across. With the classic Bad Brains lightening bolt and logo, Shepard and his team did a phenomenal job on assisting Bad Brains with this Hot Sauce vision.   The limited edition screen print signed by Bad Brains and Shepard Fairey and Hot Sauce can be snatched up here.  The screen print is FIRE!

C’mon Everybody

I love the way the past is reinterpreted in art and music to create something new. You see it done very creatively in hip-hop with disco, soul, rock, and funk samples.  Through punk rock reinterpretations of older rock ‘n’ roll songs I discovered Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, Vince Taylor, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Bobby Fuller Four, and early Who. The Sex Pistols with Sid Vicious on vocals covered two Eddie Cochran songs, Somethin” Else and C’mon Everybody which inspired this print. Sid’s leather jacket and lock necklace can be seen in the image. Sid’s version of C’mon Everybody is irreverent and raucous, but the original has a heap of rebellious swagger too. Check out the lyrics… innocent but defiant.
