Obey Giant Headlines

The Future Belongs to Soft Power

Jack Healy, the former director of Amnesty International and the co-founder of the Human Rights Action Center has written a great piece posted on the HuffPo. I think this MLK quote relates to it nicely. Check it out.-Shepard

Violence as a way of achieving racial justice is both impractical and immoral. It is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. The old law of an eye for an eye leaves everybody blind. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding; it seeks to annihilate rather than to convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys a community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends by defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers.    – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Ragged Kingdom x Jamie Reid x Subliminal Projects

I am very excited to announce we will be doing an art show with Jamie Reid, the legendary artist behind the best known graphics of the Sex Pistols. Jamie almost single-handedly shaped the aesthetic of punk rock with his ransom note lettering and iconic graphics for “God Save The Queen”, “Pretty Vacant”, “Anarchy In The UK”, and NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS HERE’S THE SEX PISTOLS. The show will represent work from throughout Jamie’s career. Jamie has been one of my biggest influences and I’m honored that we worked on some collaborative images for the show. The new images deal with the timeless problems of corruption and wealth inequality, but tie into the very current themes of Occupy Wall Street and the dead end of fossil fuel consumption. This show should not be missed.

Take Action: Pass a Local Resolution to Overturn Citizens United

Amending the U.S. Constitution to overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision is an enormous undertaking. To reclaim our democracy from the deep pockets of special interests and the super wealthy, we must build a network of Americans ready to get to work.

Are you one of those Americans?

By signing my petition, you and thousands of likeminded citizens have helped me champion the OCCUPIED Amendment in Washington. Now, I am asking you to help me take this fight from the halls of Congress to your city council.

Will you sign up to help pass a resolution in your local community calling for a constitutional amendment?

Sign up to participate in Resolutions Week and you’ll be linked up with national organizers who are helping Americans across the country save our democracy.

Every city council, county commission, or state legislature that proclaims its support for amending the Constitution brings our nation one step closer towards a democracy that works for all of us – not just corporations and a few well-connected billionaires.

I hope you’ll sign up to participate in Resolutions Week by clicking here.

Thank you again. Let’s continue to build a movement to return our democracy to the people.

Kind regards,

Congressman Ted Deutch

KONY 2012 Video

I have been receiving  a lot of correspondence about the Invisible Children KONY video in which I appear briefly. Though I oppose injustice in any form, and therefore I support the message of the video, I was not consulted about the video which uses footage from my appearance on THE HENRY ROLLINS SHOW. I have no direct relationship with Invisible Children. I am concerned about what is happening in Uganda(and Darfur and many other areas of turmoil in the world). I have worked with L.E.A.D. Uganda to raise money for schools there.  I’m glad Invisible Children is spreading awareness about Kony and the children he abducts to turn into child soldiers. These injustices need to be combated and encouraging people to use the democratic and creative tools at their disposal is a great thing. I cannot vouch for Invisible Children as an organization other than to say that I really like the spirit and effort behind this video. I did not design the Kony poster in the video, but I think a lot of the graphics in the video are well designed and effective. Check it out for yourself, I hope it encourages compassion and further action for social justice.

Cleon Peterson at Guerrero Gallery SF

Guerrero Gallery is pleased to present The Brinksman, an exhibition by Cleon Peterson.

Opening Reception: Saturday, March 10th, 7-11pm
Show Dates: March 10 – April 7, 2012

Through his paintings, we encounter a world riddled with anxiety, corruption and savage ferocity, where deviance and violence equal the usual state of affairs. Peterson describes his bedlam as “a gray world where law breakers and law enforcers are one in the same; a world where ethics have been abandoned in favor of personal entitlement.
