Anthropocene Extinction by SWOON

Swoon is one of my favorite artists and a lovely person. She just did a great install at the Boston ICA. If you are in New England check it out in person, or see it on the website.
-Shepard

On the occasion of its 75th anniversary this fall, the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA) has commissioned Brooklyn-based artist Swoon to create the fifth installation of the Sandra and Gerald Fineberg Art Wall. Extending from the elevator atrium to the lobby and soaring forty feet up to the ceiling, Swoon’s new installation is the largest to occupy the Fineberg Art Wall. The work, titled Anthropocene Extinction, is composed of streams of intricately cut paper which connect key sculptural elements within the installation-including a 400-pound, suspended bamboo sculpture. Swoon is on view at the ICA from Sept. 3, 2011 to Dec. 30, 2012.

In both her art and her own life, Swoon is deeply engaged with social issues and humanitarian projects. Anthropocene Extinction looks at the effects of industrialized society on people and the environment, and includes a portrait of one of the last Australian Aboriginals to have experienced traditional nomadic culture. The term “anthropocene” refers to the “age of man” and was recently coined by geologists to describe the outsized influence of man on the natural environment.

In conversation with Bob Mould

Husker Du was one of my favorite bands as a teenager. I made home-made tee shirts of their logo and their Metal Circus and New Day Rising album art.

On Sept. 20, I will be having a discussion/conversation with Bob Mould, one of the two main songwriters of that influential group, who has continued to make great music. Check out the details, and check the photo of me from 88 with hand drawn Husker Du logo (along with the Cramps) on my art box.

The event will be held at Herbst Theatre in San Francisco Sept 20 2011.  Buy tickets here.  Shepard will also be DJing after the lecture at RICKSHAW STOP starting at 10pm.  More information available here.

RE-ELECT SHERIFF JOE ARPAIO

Immigration reform is an important issue to me, especially as it relates to human rights abuse, invasion of privacy, and racial profiling. A great art-based campaign called CultureStrike begins Sept. 11 with many artists and writers. Also, Ernesto Yerena and I worked on another immigration themed print of Sheriff Joe Arpaio to fundraise for human rights in Arizona. Read about both here. Thanks for caring.
-Shepard

As the next election season ramps up, Shepard Fairey and Ernesto Yerena are selling their “Re-election” poster for the last remaining birther, Sheriff Arpaio in Maricopa County, Arizona.

Before there was the “show me your papers” law, SB 1070, there was and still is Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the lawman who went on CNN to say he was proud to be considered KKK.  Empowered by the federal government, the Sheriff’s department converted itself into an Immigration/deportation pipeline, spending its time donning ski-masks to break up families, ask people for their papers and perform warrantless searches. Rather than live in fear, Arizonans have organized for more than the past three years asking for the Dept. of Justice to intervene in Maricopa County.
This poster, like the upcoming documentary “Under Arpaio”, is another weapon in the cache of the AltoArizona campaign to bring Arpaio to justice and restore human rights in Arizona.

The Rise by Obey Clothing

Obey Clothing and Greg Roman made this video, which was shot right before MoCA’s “Art In The Streets” show opened. It talks about my roots as an artist and has footage proving I could once hold my own on a mini-ramp.-Shepard

Shepard talks about the influence graffiti, skateboarding and punk rock had on his life and the ways it shaped his art career. Key moments such as a school trip to NY and the melding of styles by brands such as Shut Skateboards allowed him to develop his techniques. Look out for some classic 90’s skate footage as well.
